*About the Department :-* Jyotish shastra is famous as 'Jyotirvigyan' the name envision it's scientific aspect . The Shastra also achieves 'DrikSiddhi' in the category of science due to the visualisation of velocity, position, relationship etc of planets and constellation by using mathematical Siddhant . The Shastra mainly consist of three wings Siddhant , Samhita and Hora . Since the establishment of University , the Department of Jyotish is committed to preserve this classical traditional knowledge and to make this rare scientifically useful knowledge accessible to general public, with the untiring efforts of the current and first Vice Chancellor of the SLBSNSU (Central University)Prof. Ramesh Kumar Pandey and Prof. Sukhdev Chaturvedi former Head of Department of Jyotish and Vedvedang , the world wide development of part time courses to calm the thirst of people curious about this traditional and modern knowledge is constantly in motion. The Jyotish Department conducts the following courses at the undergraduate , postgraduate and research level to preserve and promote this traditional scientific knowledge.
1.Shastri(B.A)- This three year undergraduate course is run in both Siddhant Jyotish and Phalit Jyotish. Minimum qualification for admission in this course is 10+2 or equivalent and then the admission is completed by entrance examination in the month of June -July.
2.Acharya(M.A) -This two year postgraduate course is run in both Siddhant Jyotish and Phalit Jyotish. Minimum qualification for admission in this course is Shastri or B.A with Sanskrit subject , the admission is then based on entrance examination in month of June - July.
3.Vishishtacharya (M Phil) - This one year course is run in both Siddhant Jyotish and Phalit Jyotish. Minimum qualification for admission in this course is Acharya in Jyotish or M.A with jyotish subject with minimum 55% marks ,then the admission is completed by entrance examination in month of June -July.
4.Vidyavridhi(Ph.D)- This course is run in both Siddhant Jyotish and Phalit Jyotish for the information of new facts on serious,complex and popular topics in Jyotish. Minimum qualification for admission in this course is Acharya in Jyotish , M. A with Jyotish,Vishishtacharya (M.Phil.)in Jyotish with minimum 55% marks ,The admission is based on entrance examination conducted once in a year, this is a minimum 3 years and maximum 6 years course.
In addition to above traditional courses Jyotish department conducts the following part time courses in Hindi language to benefit the masses through classical and philanthropic knowledge.
1. Jyotish Praveshika- This is a six monthly certificate course in which the minimum qualification for admission is 10+2 or equivalent.
2. Jyotish Pragya- This is a one year certificate course in which the minimum qualification for admission is 10+2 or equivalent with basic knowledge of Jyotish.
3.Jyotish Bhushan- This is a two year advance diploma course. Minimum qualification is Jyotish Pragya or B.A with Sanskrit.
4. Bhaishajya Jyotish (Medical Astrology)- This is a one year course. The minimum qualification for admission to this course is 10+2 or equivalent with basic knowledge of Jyotish.
In addition to aboveThe Jyotish department of the university annually organises a 3 day National Workshop in which vrat-parvotsav are decided based on Dharm Shastra and then published in an authentic and valuable Panchang . Presently jyotish department is researching on various diseases under DRS-III Scheme of the U.G.C.
